The one object that could make Dante reopen the entire history.
That was why she had accused Lena so quickly.
Not because she thought Lena was a thief.
Because she needed her removed before Dante started asking questions.
Dante confronted Isabella that night.
Not in front of staff.
Not dramatically.
In the same foyer where Lena had been accused.
Isabella entered wearing a black coat.
Her luggage sat near the door.
Dante stood beside the staircase.
“You packed.”
She stared at him.
“You already decided.”
“Yes.”
Her jaw tightened.
“Because of a maid?”
Dante’s expression changed.
“No.”
“That sentence alone tells me I made the right decision.”
Isabella laughed bitterly.
“She comes into this house with one ring and suddenly twenty years together between our families mean nothing?”
Dante looked at her.
“We have been engaged for fourteen months.”
“You know what I mean.”
“Yes.”
“I do.”
He stepped closer.
“Our families spent twenty-six years protecting each other.”
Isabella folded her arms.
“You think yours is innocent?”
“No.”
Dante answered immediately.
“That is the difference between us right now.”
She stared.
“My father did terrible things.”
“Yours may have too.”
“I’m willing to expose mine.”
He paused.
“Are you?”
Isabella looked away.
Dante continued.
“You found Sofia’s letter.”
Silence.
“You knew what my father did to her.”
Isabella’s eyes glistened.
“And you still looked at her daughter and called her a thief.”
“I was scared.”
“So was Lena.”
“She could destroy my family.”
“No.”
Dante shook his head.
“The truth can expose your family.”
“Your family did the destroying.”
Isabella’s face collapsed.
“You’re choosing her.”
Again.
That accusation.
Dante looked tired.
“No.”
“I’m choosing who I become after learning the truth.”
Isabella said nothing.
Dante looked toward the front door.
“The engagement is over.”
Her eyes widened even though she already knew.
“Dante.”
“I won’t marry into another lie.”
Isabella picked up her bag.
Then stopped beside him.
“You really think that girl belongs in your world?”
Dante looked at her.
“No.”
For one second, Isabella almost smiled.
Then he finished.
“I think people like us have spent too long pretending this world belongs only to us.”
Isabella left.
The investigation lasted eight months.
Victor DeLuca denied involvement.
His attorneys fought every subpoena.
Old records disappeared.
Other records surfaced.
Sofia’s account proved accurate.
Victor had known Salvatore planned an illegal takeover of Moretti companies.
There was no evidence he knew about the fire itself.
But he had concealed financial transactions afterward.
He eventually settled several civil claims and resigned from two boards.
His banking empire survived.
His reputation did not.
Isabella disappeared from Manhattan society for nearly a year.
She was never charged with anything.
